The day the island falls silent

The day the island falls silent

On March 29, Bali comes to a complete standstill – the island celebrates the Day of Silence (Nyepi), during which any movement is strictly prohibited. This is the most important holiday for Balinese Hindus, and everyone on the island is required to observe the traditions, regardless of religion.

This year, Nyepi coincides with Lebaran (Idul Fitri), the main Muslim holiday in Indonesia, when millions of people go home to their families. A huge influx of tourists and residents is expected, so traffic and airports will be overloaded.

How to prepare?

  • Choose a place in advance and be there by March 28 – roads will begin to close in the evening before Nyepi.
  • Stock up on food and water, as all shops and restaurants will close at noon on March 28.
  • Please note that there will be no transport on March 29, the airport will be closed, taxis will not work. You cannot leave your hotel or villa.
  • On the evening of March 28 – Ogo-Ogo parade. This colorful procession of demonic figures through the streets of Bali - we recommend asking your hotel where to watch it best.

What to do on the Day of Silence?

This is a unique opportunity to reset. Nyepi is the perfect day to meditate, read, write a journal or just enjoy the peace. And at night - an incredible starry sky, because the entire island is plunged into darkness for 24 hours.
