Nyepi

Balinese authorities, together with religious and cultural organizations, have begun preparing a proposal to include the Nyepi holiday in UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage list. At present, the necessary documentation is being collected and finalized, with plans to submit it to the Ministry of Culture for further review.
The main argument for the inclusion of the holiday is its profound philosophical and cultural significance. Nyepi is not just a day of silence, when life on the island comes to a standstill: airports close, transportation stops, and all activities are prohibited. It represents an entire worldview based on inner balance, mindfulness, harmony with society, and respect for nature.
The holiday reflects Bali’s unique cultural identity, combining spiritual practices, social norms, and environmental awareness. This multilayered nature makes Nyepi a strong candidate for inclusion in the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage list.
