Gentle Guardians

In the Balinese village of Bongkasa near Ubud, an unusual and inspiring initiative has begun: eight barn owls have found a new home among the rice terraces. The project is a collaboration between local farmers, the Owl Tower Bali foundation, and the Bambu Indah hotel, all of whom chose to turn to nature itself for help.

The decision was driven by a growing problem-rats causing significant damage to crops. Instead of relying on chemicals, the participants opted for a more harmonious solution: barn owls, as natural predators, can effectively control rodent populations.

The birds were released without restrictions so they can freely adapt to their new environment. It is expected that their presence will help restore ecological balance across approximately 40 hectares of farmland.

If the owls successfully settle in, their population may establish itself in the area, becoming a living example of how traditional farming and environmental care can go hand in hand
