Bali Turns 68: The Story of the Island That Became a Global Brand

Today, August 14, Bali celebrates the 68th anniversary of the establishment of the Province of Bali.

For millions of people, Bali means the ocean, rice terraces, temples, surfing and a unique tropical lifestyle. But August 14 marks an important date in the island’s modern administrative history.

On August 14, 1958, Law No. 64/1958 came into force, officially establishing Bali as a separate province of Indonesia. Before that, Bali was part of the larger administrative territory of the Lesser Sunda Islands, together with other islands in the region.

The provincial capital was initially Singaraja in the north of the island. In 1960, the administrative center was moved to Denpasar, which remains the capital of Bali today.

But the story of modern Bali goes far beyond administrative changes.

Over the past decades, the island has developed into one of the world’s most recognizable tourism destinations. Its unique combination of Balinese culture, nature, climate and tourism infrastructure has created a powerful international identity.

Today, Bali is much more than a holiday destination. The island has become a hub for international business, remote work, entrepreneurship, hospitality and real estate investment.

New districts, modern residential and hospitality developments, improving infrastructure and sustained international demand continue to transform Bali. At the same time, the island preserves what makes it unique: its culture, traditions and philosophy of harmony between people, nature and society.

This transformation is particularly visible in the real estate market. Interest in Bali is now driven not only by tourism, but also by people choosing the island as a place to live, build businesses and make long-term investments.

Sixty-eight years of modern provincial history is just one chapter in Bali’s much longer story.
